Rate Limits
Rate limits are enforced per API key using a sliding window algorithm. When you exceed the limit, the API returns 429 Too Many Requests with a Retry-After header.
What counts as a request?
- Each
POST /v1/screenshotcall counts as 1 request toward your rate limit - Cached responses (
X-Cache: HIT) still count toward rate limits but do NOT count toward your monthly quota GET /v1/usageandGET /v1/healthdo not count toward any limits
Best practices
- Implement exponential backoff when you receive a 429 response
- Use the
X-Credits-Remainingheader to monitor your quota in real-time - Leverage caching by using consistent parameters for repeated URLs
- Use the
GET /v1/usageendpoint to check your monthly usage
Overage Billing
If you exceed your monthly screenshot quota, additional screenshots are billed at:
$0.003 per screenshot (overage)
That's $3 per 1,000 extra screenshots. Overage is billed at the end of each billing period via Stripe. You can set spending alerts in your dashboard.
402 once you hit 100 screenshots. Overage billing only applies to paid plans.
FAQ
What happens when I hit my monthly limit?
On the Free plan, you get a 402 Quota Exceeded error. On paid plans, additional screenshots are charged as overage ($0.003 each).
Do cached screenshots count against my quota?
No. If the same URL + options were captured recently (within 24h), the cached result is returned for free. Check the X-Cache: HIT header.
When does my billing period reset?
Your quota resets on the same day each month as your subscription start date. Usage is tracked in UTC.
Can I upgrade or downgrade mid-cycle?
Yes. Upgrades take effect immediately with prorated billing. Downgrades take effect at the next billing cycle.
Is there a custom/enterprise plan?
Yes. If you need more than 100,000 screenshots/month, higher rate limits, or an SLA, contact us at support@getsnap.dev.
